76The truth behind husky's
I have been hearing, reading, and seeing many things about certain breeds of dogs that are shinning a negative light on these great animals. One of my favorite dogs is the Husky. There is something captivating to me about how they look and act that I cannot get away from. With few people (especially in the south - for some good reasoning) not knowing about Husky's there is some false advertising about them that hopefully I can clear up.
Traits
Some common traits about Husky's is that they are naturally very gentle creatures that are extremely outgoing and intelligent. They can be independent pets when an owner is not around, so they won't lull or experience separation anxiety like others. They are extremely friendly an eager to bond with their family when they are around. However, these dogs are somewhat difficult to train and do require a special person who is willing to be patient and persistent. But as anyone who has trained a dog will know, this really could apply to any dog and varies greatly with each individual pet. Husky's are excellent with children and families of all sizes. They are not prone to lash out or exhibit aggressive behaviors.
Barking
Now when it comes to barking, this truly is where Husky's make a reputation. They do not actually "bark" often which is good. But they do love to let others hear their "Siberian music" or howling. Since this is a natural trait for Husky's be ready if you are planning on owning one any time soon. This can be a very difficult behavior to train but can be done...just not as quickly as training dogs to not bark. Also if you are more comfortable with quiet time in your home...Husky's love to talk...all the time. You can tell them about your day and they will surely respond in detail.
Shedding
The biggest aspect of Husky's that make people hesitant is their shedding. This is where the love has to come in on the owners part. When a husky sheds in the summer, their hair flares and you can grab it by the clump. As breeding becomes more advanced, Husky's are being breed to retain a very short coat in the winter and summer. So if you feel like you could love a Husky but not deal with the shedding it is smart to find a breeder that can get short-haired Husky's. Harder to find but worth every penny.
Day-to-day living
Husky are outdoor pets, although they love to snuggle up in bed at night. These dogs are inherently active dogs, so exercise is a passion for them. I found that I actually had a great time getting into shape with mine after work when it was time to go out. This is not a dog you want to keep inside all the time or confine to a small area by keeping them leashed...like any dog. They are a blast to take out, play with and watch. They are not attack dogs, so Husky's get along great with other pets and love to show affection and receive it!
Owners
These wonderful creatures live on average 14 years. They are a joy even into their old age, so if you think you are ready to become an owner...it is a marriage. Well not exactly but you will have yours for a long time. Interaction and bonding time are a must. Training them should start around 5 months and make sure you know what behaviors you want to prevent early on. Digging in the yard, howling, and affection are the three most characteristics I have found myself to focus on with mine. These dogs couldn't get any better but like with any they do require some correction, even though it might take a little longer.

@Riley - they are incredibly smart and stubborn. Once you get them trained though I can see why so many trust these dogs with their lives in such barren environments.

My beautiful husky, Marilyn, was a loving friend and a joy to my family. I got her at a dog pound and fell in love with her, i took her home and never regreted it. She was well behaved and tolerant of my cat, Shadow. I also got a basset hound, Roscoe; at a dog pound and eventually Marilyn accepted him as her friend and they were always together. My beautiful Marilyn had a heart attack on Wednesday and was died. Roscoe and my family are mourning for her but i am so glad she was in my life and will always be thinking about my gentle little girl. This husky was the BEST. God bless you all.

Hi Husky fans, I have two cats and am thinking of getting a sibe husk puppy bitch. I hear that because of their hunting nature they are not always compatible with other pets. Does anyone have any experience on this matter.

I have a 5 month old Husky named Charsha, & a 3yr old Alaskan Malamute Named Chinook, Both beautiful Family dogs. The only trouble i have is the digging up of the yard and always jumping the fence, They are such a great pet and love the beach, I have 4 kids and these dogs just adore the kids and make sure all is safe...
Has anyone got any tips to help me with the digging of the yard, We have tried putting there poo in the holes but it hasn't helped. They still dig holes every where...
you need to do lot more activities with them. you know how the nintendo ds has brain training? its similar to this only you provide the game but its real not digital.
Do this before meals and add in some long walks before and after the activities and your problems with digging should be minimized.
(may i also suggest a sandpit in your garden where you can bury something thats interesting so their focus is off the garden and the fence)

I have a male siberian and while they are WONDERFUL dogs, you left out some of the most important aspects, and these should also be considered if you're planning on getting one!
1) Canine Houdinis - Huskies are escape artists; they will jump/climb over, dig under, go through a fence or barrier--if there's a way, they will find it.
2) When they're gone, they're GONE -- Huskies are not very good at coming when called. There are FAR too many things out there that are more interesting than you. Off-leash? Hope you can run fast--after 2 years of work, I can hike off-leash with my husky if he's got a heavy backpack on to slow him down. And I am a dog trainer--how about the average owner?
3) Dominance - male huskies tend to compete with you for the alpha role. Relationship exercises and the family hierarchy need to be firmly established or you'll have a pushy alpha dog on your hands.
But they are very sweet, loving dogs, great with kids and a joy to be around. But everyone should know both sides of the story!

I've got a husky.her Name is Glacier she is the best behaved dog i have ever had! but she is xtreemly shy. proby because of her past. *she was abused, and her old owners ran over her with their car. but she is in good hands now* all dogs are diffrent.mine sleeps in my bed with me. we take her for plenty of walks so she isn't fat. she hunts when she can even if we arn't there to watch. I LOVE MY HUSKY!!!!!

Huskies. We have one. Its honestly not the sharpest pencil in the drawer. Don't call me a hater cuz we have one, i know. Shes trained, just unnreal sometimes when it comes to doing the same crime and being punished. These dogs can be trained, but it takes longer for one specific reason: they're just not as smart.

I wish I could have one but my mom duzn't like how they shed and how you have to brush them like every half an hour! lol but I am going to be a husky breeder when I grow up! and I will also be a akita breeder also! Huskies r amazing. They r very smart independent dogs. I have always wanted one. The closest thing to owning one is my great aunts husky. She is sooooo cute. Her eyes are brown and baby blue..... Just like a horse at my barn.... hmmmmm
i own 3 husky now and i really really love them. Called sally-sidney and alvin. everyday when i come home from work at night, without seeing me, they already know it's me..they bark, and when see me,they jump on me (3 of them instantly). Husky lover would know how its feel jumped by husky LOL. Husky is smart when trained well. If someone said that husky stupid-maybe they are not trained well. They love to play around-run circling yard..and I hope one day i can fullfill my dream, have my own Husky Mansion full with huskies run and play.
hello everyone!!
i just my husky, shes white with blue eyes and shes about 4-5 months old...ive had her for 2 months already....but we have not once heard her bark or howl!!!! she makes this weird noice when she gets stuck somewhere or when we bathe her, like she actually screams,,,so I know her voice is fine...but no barking and no howling... is there something wrong with her????
please help!!
As my experienced with 3 husky-husky was not barking type, they rarely bark somehow. My husky only bark when i got home - eating time and hmm..that's all.. Rarely howling either. No need to worry. Just feed her well..play and spend some time..and train patiently. You will get the result the next 3-4month.

I will try to have more bonding time with her....but honestly in 2 months no sound is just worrying me...hahahaa but hopefully she'll come around... I play with her,,,but the only game she likes is the "biting my arm" game,,,so yeah, gotta work on those games as well!!

@Isa: no worries if your husky isn't very vocal. I have 2 huskies. A 7 month old black and white female and a 4 1/2 month old all white male. My male is very vocal and loves to howl, but my female does not. I have only heard her bark a few times. Normally it is when she is playing with her dog dish once it is empty. It is absolutely normal. Huskies aren't meant to be a noisey breed.
I trained my dog and learned lots of tricks in less than 2 weeks, shes 5 months old, never pees inside the house, she learnt lots of tricks, she even opens doors, huskies are very smart!!!

I have a 10 month old. Best dog I have ever seen. We live in NC and have traveled from OH to New Orleans in the last three months. He loves every minute of it. Huskies DO love their exercise!!! Do not get one if you think they are JUST cute. They will put you into shape. As well as your dog. You both will be happy. It's a 50-50 relationship

Quick response to the article. Almost all of is spot on. I own three Siberian Huskies and have fostered countless more. One correction though to your post. You mention that they do not exhibit separation anxiety. This is actually not correct. Huskies because they are a pack oriented dog can often exhibit strong separation anxiety. It is typically shown by destructive activities such as tearing apart things in the house when left unattended. Crate Training is a great way to curb this activity and helps the husky feel safe and secure when your not at home.

I just got a white male husky pup. He's 6 weeks old, and let me tell you....he is already testing me.
I have a 5 month old white husky and he is my baby the only problem i have with him is his recall but this is slowly getting better with treats on every return. He sleeps sits and stays where and when he is told. Loves other dogs and most of all my 3 year old daughter. But exercise is a must he gets a 2 mile walk once a day and atleast 5 smaller 1s inbetween with his last walk bein 15 mins round roads and an hour play in our fenced field with his best friend a 4 month french mastiff and still has loads of energy. But he is truly wonderful.

I just lost my beloved red/white female husky to a heart attack. She was my everything. I will eventually get another female for they are a awesome breed. Even though I know there is not another one out there like my Dutchess, I know another one will help fill the void in my heart!

My family has a husky named Nash. He is the sweetest, most loving dog - however he does a complex.... he thinks he is a little dog! He tends to knock over people very easily when he jumps up - a common trait of the breed. Aside from his jumping and 'barking' - I wouldn'd trade him for the world!

Just throwing a few things in there.
Huskies are pack dogs, they love human attention and love to be around other dogs. If you think you are going to be out of the house a lot its best to have another animal with them. Especially there own breed, they highly enjoy the company of there own breed.
For digging: If digging is a problem put the dogs feces in the hole and bury it. If your huskie is digging shallow holes in the middle of the yard odds are they are trying to cool down.
Grooming: Great tool is a rake brush/de-shed brush, can get it at most stores. Just start at head and slowly go to tail. Make sure you are outside it will come out in handfuls.
Activeness: Huskies tend to be highly active like said above. Working this activeness is a major to do! If you do not work your huskies they can and will get destructive. So make sure to get a little play time/walk/run in before leaving them alone for long periods of time.

I live in australia and am looking at buying a husky. Don't know if male or female is better!? my housemate also has a 2yo labrador will this matter? The labby is so smart, will her intelligence come across to the husky with additional training? And what other type of things will I need to know before buying this breed? First huskies are beautiful dogs. They are extremely smart. My huskie has escaped few times,and in all instances has come back too me once called back.
Make no mistake,they are a menace inside of the house. They mimick what humans do,like opening doors..mine was very good at it
I've had my husky for 10 months now - and honestly - my partner and I couldn't have asked for a greater addition to our family -- we were a little hesitant in taking her to off leash hours at a park -- but our dog responds when we whistle or call her name - I encourage all husky parents to seek out a park (not a dog run) that offers off leash hours--- I feel like if you have a good relationship with your husky she will come back -- --
