Looking for something to do with your pooch? Join a dog “fun” club.

There are dog clubs across the country. Some are recognized and affiliated with the AKC, while others are groups of people and dogs that share common interests. If you are looking for a hobby or somewhere to take your dog outside the home, then there’s a dog club for you. All it takes is figuring out what exactly you are looking for and finding a club that fits your needs.

Although breed clubs and “dog” clubs overlap, they are not necessarily the same thing. Breed clubs are normally sponsored by the AKC. If your pooch is a purebred, then you are eligible to join the club. The clubs host events (like their national counterparts), such as agility and performance events. The events are licensed, so the dogs are able to receive points to qualify them for national events. Now, this article is focusing on dog clubs, which are sometimes referred to as fun clubs. These clubs are normally not regulated by a larger organization. Depending on the club, a limited number of breeds or all breeds can join. For instance, there may be a Golden Retriever club in your area, or there may be a general dog club.

Dog clubs are less focused on competition (although they do hold their own events) and more on socialization. There are a number of activities that a dog club may host. At times, the dogs may not be invited, making it a social tool for owners. Since many dog clubs accept a number of breeds, you may choose to join the club based on the activities that are provided. If you enjoy hiking, then find a special interest hiking club where pets and owners spend lots of time outdoors. If you have a special interest, then you can probably find a club focused on that interest!

Many dog clubs even take their ideals out into the community. The owners and pups may give presentations at local schools, showing children what to do and not to do around a dog. If you have a breed that is labeled aggressive (i.e. Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, etc.), then clubs love to show kids that not all “big” dogs are mean. Dog clubs may also participate in community service activities, such as visiting hospitals and retirement homes with the dogs.

So, why would you want to join a club? A dog club is a great chance for you to meet other owners that share your interests. You can participate in meetings where everything from obedience to grooming is covered. If you have any questions concerning your dog, then you have the expertise of other dog owners. On the weekends, you can take part in fun activities and events with your dog, spicing up your normal routine. For your dog, a club gives him the chance to be properly socialized with people and other animals. More than just a trip to the dog park, club activities offer a fun atmosphere for owners and pooches. On the same note, be careful in which club you choose. Your high-strung Australian Shepherd may not fit in too well at a quiet dinner party.

Before you are admitted into the club, the club may have specific requirements for your pooch. Your pet may have to undergo a socialization or obedience test to make sure that he’s a good fit. Don’t worry; a little puppy won’t be turned away because he hasn’t mastered “sit.” Instead, the tests are in place to make sure that your pet will not be overly aggressive or overly shy when introduced to all the other pets. Some clubs may not even have the tests, welcoming anyone and everyone, while other clubs may have more strict exams.

If you are interested in joining a club, then figure out first what you are looking for. If you want an AKC sponsored club, then check the AKC’s website for a list of groups around your area. If you are looking for something fun and not necessarily regulated, then check your yellow pages or speak with a representative from an animal organization. Animal shelters are great resources, since they often have direct contact with the clubs.

If you are looking for a little something extra to do with your dog, then consider joining a dog club. Dog clubs offer fun activities for owners and pups, making them great tools in the socialization process. It’s fairly easy to find a special interest club that matches your interests. Whichever club you choose, make sure it’s a good fit for you and your pooch! To keep your dog safe at the park look into a dog training collar and or even secure dog crates for those just in case situation.
